Cherishing Earthly Gifts – Happy Earth Week 2025

Happy Earth Week 2025! The Serviceberry

As we kick off Earth Week 2025, let us remember Robin Wall Kimmer’s invitation to relate to air, water, ether, and soil as Earthly gifts. In her book, “Serviceberry,” Robin reminds us of the responsibility of a gift – sharing, respect, reciprocity, and gratitude. No an indebtedness but remembrance that we humans are part of the body of Mother Earth.

As we enter this turbulent week filled with uncertainty, let us root down with the knowing of Earthly Gifts! Let us remember that deconstruction is also a gift no matter how painful it may be.

Economy translates to ‘home management.’ With Mother Earth as our home, it is up to us to determine how we want to ‘manage’ our existence here. Our current capitalist economy sees these ‘Earthly Gifts’ as ‘resources’ to be used by a few humans for their comfort on the backs of many many other humans as well as water, soil, and air.

Each breath offers and opportunity to reimagine water, air, soil, and fire as ‘Earthly Gifts.’ With each breath you experience the full dimensions of these gifts and yet, our capitalist economy requires disconnection and the illusion of rugged individualism.

In nature, there are patterns and cycles and nothing is wasted. Through the decomposition of our bodies, releasing nutrients back into the environment, these cycles model the sharing, respect, and reciprocity that Robin illustrates. Learn more about the cultural cycles through the Mukuyu Grieving the Culture Series.

Quote from Eartha Kitt.

This week, Eartha Kitt reminds us of the critical role of stinky, smelly, yucky manure necessary to evolve from what is no longer serving us to what will. We can expect TONS of manure thrown our way this week … and yet … let us remember that manure has a purpose too. Manure unprocessed becomes disease. Manure processed becomes fertilizer. Natural fertilizers (e.g. compost, grain meal, amino acids, and seaweed extracts) are the essential nutrients to growth and development.

WHAT IF this sh*t storm is necessary to grow and evolve? There is no going back only moving forward.

Keep composting my friends! We need all th sh*t we can get to evolve to the next level of humanity.

Only together can we thrive!
